 Kerala is coconut country. The word Kerr itself means coconut in Malayalam, the local language. Coconut is the most ubiquitous tree in the State, and Keralites have found ingenious uses for every part of the tree.
Coir is a natural fibre produced from coconut husk. It is totally organic, bio-degradable, hard and strong, and has natural resistance to rot, mold and moisture. Coir is spun into ropes.

Coir fibre is extracted from the fibrous covering of coconut. It is natural, bio-degradable and environment friendly. It is tough and durable, versatile and resilient to flame and fungi, provides insulation and helps sound modulation. Coir pith is the dust after extracting coir fibre.
Hygroscopic in nature, it is a good soil conditioner and a substitute for 'peat moss' in horticulture. It is converted in to organic manure for soil improvement and higher yield. |

The husks are separated from the nuts and are retted in lagoons and brackish water up to ten months.

 Depending upon the method of extraction,, coir fibres are divided in to 2 varieties namely: White fibre, and Brown Fibre
White fibre or retted fibre, which is more suited for spinning coir yarn, is extracted from husk of matured coconut after a process known ad 'Retting'. This method is commonly followed in the State of Kerala where lagoons and brackish water sources are available in abundance. Retted fibre (more suited for spinning) is converted into different varieties of coir yarn for further processing in to finished products like ropes, doormats, mattings, carpets, geotextiles etc., for export and internal consumption.
Brown fibre, comprising of bristle fibres, which are the coarser, thicker and longer staples, and mattress fibres, which are finer and shorter staples, is extracted from unretted husk.
